But this time was different because it wasn't part of my job, and I couldn't give up the work that I was getting paid to do in order to make time to write my thesis.

I discovered the SECOND SECRET of writing a book at the beginning of my second semester of graduate school. The secret is: Make the project manageable by doing it in small pieces. Like many writers, I tried to clear entire calendar days to work on my thesis, thinking I could knock off ten or twenty pages at once.
Have you ever tried to write 10-20 pages in one day? I've tried it several times, and it never works. For one, I either had to take a day away from my weekend with my family, or I needed to give up a workday during the week.
So instead of killing myself one day a week to get a lot of work done, I decided to write one page a day. That's it. One page is about 250-300 words, and it took me less than an hour every time. Most days, I was done in less than 30 minutes.
I quickly learned the beauty of this method. First, writing a page a day takes almost no time and it's easy to squeeze in on most days. It's so painless, in fact, that after a few weeks, I was amazed at how much I had actually accomplished.
Second, writing my page every day became a habit. It's like training yourself to go to the gym three days a week -- after a while you don't your day is complete until after you've done it.
And third, even if I missed a few days, I saw results. I'm no angel. There were days that I watched television instead of writing my page (or even wrote my page with the television on), there were days I skipped my writing time to have dinner with a friend or go to the movies with my son.
